Pinfinity+ Pop Quiz - Back to the Future Trivia!
Great Scott! We're celebrating the iconic franchise Back to the Future with two incredible Pinfinity+ AR pins!
BTTF has been prominent in pop culture since the day it came out - Back to the Future day, the DeLorean, "1.21 GIGAWATTS", and so much more. As a matter of fact, I probably quote BTTF more than any other movie, seeing as every time we play Settlers of Catan for family game night I say: "Roads? Where we're going we don't need raods" every time someone builds a road. It never gets old, I promise - but I digress!
Back to the Future has so many awesome little pop culture nuggets, fun facts, and stories that we decided to put together a Pinfinity Pop Quiz with five fun factoids about BTTF that you may (or may not) know. Answers at the bottom! (No cheating!)
1. Michael J. Fox was perfect for the role of Marty McFly, but did you know he wasn't the original actor cast to play him? Who was the first Marty McFly?
2. Doc Brown, played by the incredible Christopher Lloyd, was almost played by a number of tremendous actors - can you name at least two of them?
3. Back to the Future almost wasn't Back to the Future at all... What was the alternate title floating around for BTTF?
4. The infamous speed required for the DeLorean to be able to time travel has been burned into everyone's Pop Culture brains - but what is the ACTUAL reason 88 miles per hour is what the filmmakers went with?
5. Speaking of the DeLorean, did you know that in an early version of the script the time machine was completely different? Know what it is? (Hint: yours is definitely "running" right now!)
ANSWERS:
1. The original actor was actually Eric Stoltz! Well... Robert Zemeckis technically always wanted Fox to play the part, but he was super busy at the time with Family Ties, so they went with Stoltz. Unfortunately, Stoltz brought a completely different dynamic to the film than Zemeckis was looking for, so he was later removed from the role, with the team making it with with Fox's schedule - and the rest is history!
2. It's a LONG list of huge names that were considered for the role of Doc Brown, check this out: John Lithgow, Jeff Goldblum, John Candy, Danny DeVito, Gene Hackman, Gene Wilder, Robin Williams, and James Woods... GREAT SCOTT that's a lot of big names! It's hard to think about BTTF without Lloyd, though, so we're happy with who they went with!
3. One of the titles floated around was actually Spaceman From Pluto! Allegedly the producers were concerned the movie would have similar box office misfortunes as other time-travel movies that came out around the same time. Fortunately, Steven Spielberg didn't agree with the odd title and they stuck with Back to the Future!
4. There are a lot of rumors about the scientific reasoning behind 88MPH - does it have to do with wormholes? Time travel stability? Some mathematical equation? Nope, it's much simpler than that... The designers for the movie just thought 88 would look cool on the speedometer, and the producers thought it would be easy to remember!
5. In one of the early versions of the script, the time-travel "device" wasn't a car at all. Marty McFly climbed inside a refrigerator that was strapped to the device, which was launched into an atomic blast! That's definitely one way to hit 88MPH, I guess... Fortunately Spielberg stepped in and thought it wasn't a great idea, and he was worried that children might copy Marty and try to hop into mom and pops fridges to travel through time... Good call, Mr. Spielberg!
